About the collection…
The University of Georgia College of Engineering celebrated the opening of a permanent art collection entitled, ‘The Art of Engineering and Technology,’ on Friday, April 8, 2022 at the Driftmier Engineering Center.
This exclusive collection marks the 10-year anniversary of the College of Engineering, reflects the college’s strategic vision and showcases important student projects, professorial research and applied technology.
The collection is a collaboration between artist Jan Perkins, students and the professors who led the depicted research. The images represent The Small Satellite Research Laboratory, The UGA Strength Laboratory and the three schools within the college: School of Chemical, Materials and Biomedical Engineering; School of Environmental, Civil, Agricultural and Mechanical Engineering and School of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
The nine-piece collection was commissioned to stimulate conversation and critical thought for the viewer while acknowledging the significant impact the college is making on society. The mixed media paintings integrates real, and complex imagery in a classical style that evoke an emotive, unique experience for the viewer.
The exploration of new methods, materials and techniques adds a dimensional quality that is evident throughout the collection. “It is these elements of artistic expression that cause us to consider how the art has been created and also how we view it.” - JP
